Some Guidelines for Turning Around Infant Bedding Crib Sets as Your Bundle of Joy Grows Older

Safety concerns should always be realized when making decisions on baby bedding purchases. When it comes to safety and quality standards, you will find that numerous child safety organisations have put out lists of requirements and recommendations for parents who are trying to pick out crib bedding. Newborns are unable to protect themselves from suffocation so there are guidelines in place to promote their safety.

Consistent with these suggestions, kids should sleep supine without any pliable bedding material in the crib. For safety purposes, babies should not be surrounded with any items in their crib, regardless of the lack of aesthetics. To follow this guidance strictly, only a mattress covered with fitted sheets should be in the crib. To maintain a blanket’s suitability, make sure it is strongly tucked in at the end of the bed and does not go up past the baby’s chest.

Crib bumpers are a matter for debate, while they are often tightly affixed to the crib rails and unlikely to obstruct an infant’s breathing, many pediatricians still recommend against their use to maximize airflow. Because of these problems, there have been new types of bumpers being designed. The confusion over crib bumpers in part stems from the fact that even now they are packaged together with most baby bedding. Because of the conflicting information and opinions surrounding crib bumpers, parents are advised to use their discretion and decide whether or not bumpers are appropriate in their situation.

You should follow American Academy of Pediatrics guidance on minimal bedding until your baby is at least a year old because at that age they can push bedding out of their faces. During the baby’s first year, the crib’s contents will need some changes to reduce the injuries incurred. It is important that once a baby is able to move on their own, and has gained the ability to sit upright or pull themselves up to standing with the use of the crib bars, that the mattress be lowered and any items that would facilitate getting out of the crib be removed. For safety purposes, parents should not use crib bumpers, as children can easily use it as a step to exit their crib.

Comfortable and decorative bedding items can be put in a child’s crib after age 1 when the risk of SIDS drops. You can also find blankets or a bed skirt to go with your baby room decor. Fuzzy blankets provide warmth and are wonderful for snuggling and can be found in child appropriate sizes. Most toddlers like having a cuddly toy in bed to snuggle with and provide comfort overnight; however you should stay away from pillows until your child is almost two years old.
